Category: About the Medicine & Experience

Q1: What is plant medicine?
A: At our retreats, we work with sacred, time-honored plant teachers like Ayahuasca, Bufo and Hikuri. These are not recreational substances; they are used within a traditional, intentional container for healing, introspection, and spiritual exploration.

Q2: Is this retreat right for me?
A: This work is profound and can be challenging. It is best suited for those seeking deep emotional, psychological, or spiritual healing; those feeling “stuck” in life patterns; or individuals on a sincere path of self-discovery. It is not a substitute for clinical therapy or medical treatment for acute conditions.

Q3: What are the potential benefits?
A: Participants report a wide range of experiences, including: release of past trauma, reduced anxiety and depression, increased self-love and clarity, a profound connection to nature and spirit, and insights into life’s purpose. Outcomes are personal and unique to each individual.

Q4: Is it safe?
A: Physical Safety: Our primary commitment. We conduct rigorous medical screenings, work with experienced facilitators and indigenous curanderos/as (healers), provide a held ceremonial container, and have emergency protocols. Psychological Safety: Integration support is a core part of our program to help you process the experience. However, these powerful medicines are not without risks, which is why we screen for contraindications.

Q5: I have a mental health condition (depression, anxiety, PTSD, bipolar disorder, schizophrenia). Can I attend?
A: This is critical. Certain conditions, especially a personal or family history of psychosis or bipolar disorder, can be seriously exacerbated by psychoactive substances. We require full transparency during our application process. Participation for those with active mental health diagnoses is evaluated on a strict case-by-case basis, in consultation with your healthcare provider, and may not be permitted for your safety.

Q6: How do I prepare for the retreat?
A: Preparation is key to a meaningful experience. Upon registration, you’ll receive a detailed guide covering the essential “dieta” or diet (avoiding certain foods, alcohol, and substances), medication restrictions, and mental/spiritual preparation practices like setting intentions, meditation, and journaling.

Q7: What is integration and why is it important?
A: Integration is the process of incorporating the insights and healing from your journey into your daily life. It’s where the real transformation happens. Our retreat includes dedicated integration sessions (group and optionally private) with skilled facilitators. We also provide post-retreat resources and community support to help you sustain the changes.

Q8: Where are the retreats held, and what are the accommodations like?
A: Our retreats are held in serene, private natural settings in Tulum, Mexico. Accommodations range from shared garden view rooms to private Ocean View suites. All spaces are designed to support comfort, safety, and connection with nature.

Q9: What is a typical daily schedule?
A: While each retreat varies, a day may include: morning meditation or yoga, sharing circles, time for personal reflection in nature, educational workshops on the medicine and its tradition, the ceremony itself, and integration discussions.

Q10: Who are the facilitators and healers?
A: Our team is led by indigenous maestros/as (healers) with decades of traditional training and experienced Western facilitators trained in psychology, trauma support, and somatic practices. See our “Meet the Team” page for detailed biographies and backgrounds.

Q11: What is the group size?
A: We keep our groups intentionally small (typically 10 to 20 participants) to ensure a high facilitator-to-guest ratio, personalized attention, and a strong, intimate container for the work.

Q12: What medications or conditions are contraindicated?
A: CRITICAL: Certain medications create dangerous interactions, especially SSRIs, MAOIs, and stimulants. A full list will be provided, and you must disclose all medications and supplements during screening. Conditions like heart issues, pregnancy, or a history of severe mental illness are also contraindications.

Q13: Is there medical support on-site?
A: We have at least one facilitator trained in emergency first aid and crisis management on-site at all times. We have established protocols with local clinics/hospitals.

Q14: Can I attend if I’m on antidepressants or other psychiatric medications?
A: In almost all cases, you cannot participate while on SSRIs/SNRIs or other psychiatric medications due to the risk of Serotonin Syndrome—a potentially life-threatening condition. If this is your situation, we can discuss a medication taper plan under the strict supervision of your prescribing doctor, which must be completed weeks before the retreat. This is non-negotiable for your safety.
